João Valente Cordeiro

Dr. João Valente Cordeiro is a Health Law and Ethics Assistant Professor at National School of Public Health, NOVA University Lisbon (ENSP-UNL).

He is particularly interested in the ethical, legal, and social implications of science and technology. For the last years he has focused on the interface between Health, Science, Technology, Law, and Ethics. He coordinates the Research Ethics Course of NOVA Doctoral School and is also actively involved in researching and teaching Health Law, Ethics in Science and Technology, Bioethics, Digital Health, and Precision Medicine at NOVA University.

He has conducted scientific research at the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (Porto), the Netherlands Cancer Institute (Amsterdam), London Research Institute/Cancer Research UK, and Molecular Medicine Institute (Lisbon). Overall, he worked in five multidisciplinary research labs in three European countries. He worked with bacteria and virus models using animal systems and human cells and has published work in high impact top scientific journals. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Portuguese Journal of Public Health.

He is a member of the Ethics Committee of ENSP-UNL and of the Ethics Committee of NOVASBE, a member of the Ethics Committee for Research on Human Subjects of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, and a member of the Ethics Council of NOVA University. He is also a member of the Portuguese Bar Association and practices law as a Health lawyer.

He holds a Biochemistry Degree from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, a PhD in Biochemistry and Virology from University College London and a Law Degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Lisbon.
